Are these ok for a suit and a tux for a 16 year old boy?

Yes they will work fine with a tux or a suit - for more classic style I agree with the answer about button on style rather than clip on - but if you also are wearing a cummerbund nobody will see that they are clip on - also you could try a vest (waistcoat) and again the suspenders (braces) will not be so evident/displayed, but will do their job all the same by holding up your pants.
